[THE HAWK]

Well, I just did a bit of clothes shopping at Lane Bryant and Target. So as you can imagine, I just kind of want to stick my head in the oven right now. I came out of it with some new pants, and I got four new polo shirts at Target, so that will be nice. I just wish that there were more tops at Lane Bryant that I like. I think the problem is that I don't like frilly things or things with poofy sleeves, and most of the stuff that I do like there only comes in colors that really don't look good on me. (Red, brown, orange, etc.)

Generally, depressing. We shall not even speak of all the stuff I tried on at Target before I found the polo shirts.

I just can't have nice things!

If you haven't seen it yet, here's the link to the Nigerian Spam Scam Scam site. It's even more hilarious when done as performance art.

As a whole, TAM was more fun this year than it was last year, and it was already pretty darn fun last year. I really enjoyed most of the speakers (though I think Michael Shermer is just kind of meh at public speaking, and had a hard time caring about his talk) and had a lot of fun hanging out with people in general.

I did end up going to the Skepchick party on Saturday night. It was kind of cool, because I got to meet Evelyn and talk geology for a bit. But other than that, I was just kind of bored, and it was too crowded and too noisy for my tastes. Not as bad as last year, but still, just not that enjoyable. I think even if I have an opportunity to go next year, I won't. The spot's better reserved for someone that will have more fun than me. I think I'm just not a party person.

ETA:
(And it looks like Loudtwitter crashed, so everything I updated during TAM never went through. Bleh.)

Basically, the highlights for TAM were the Nigerian Spam Scam Scam show, which I sort of randomly went to after the SGU dinner. The SGU dinner was great fun too - I ended up sitting next to Rebecca, and she was very nice, and very interesting. I also really enjoyed Dr. Fintan Steele's talk about personalized medicine being bogus according to first principles, which was even more fun because his name makes him sound like a secret agent or something.

Sitting in on the live Million Dollar Challenge was very interesting too. There were well over 500 people in the room and no one made a sound the entire time; we had to sign an agreement saying we'd remain silent before we were allowed in the room. But I found myself (silently) rooting for Ms. Sonne. I think that no one (at least no one good) wants to see someone else fail. I also think that it would be incredibly cool if someone did in reality have psychic powers. But, long story short, she failed her test with a 0% success rate.

/ETA

The flight home was very not fun. We sat at the gate for 80 minutes because of technical problems, and they had to bring in an outside air conditioning unit because the inside one just wasn't working right on the ground. It was so hot that I just kind of wanted to die. So I was over an hour late landing, which was also not fun for poor Mike, since he was picking me up.

I ended up taking today off to recover and do laundry, in addition to lowering my self-esteem by shopping for clothes. I also discovered that someone (no idea which of the cats) peed on a pile of sheets that no one had gotten around to folding. That was fun to deal with. It had better not happen again, or furry little asses are going to get kicked.

Well, the GRE wasn't as utterly horrible as I thought it would be, though there were some questions that made me want to stab myself in the eye with one of the #2 pencils. The analytical part was actually pretty fun. I have no idea if I did any good on it, but it was fun. If nothing else, in the portion where I got to pick apart the logic of someone's argument, I got to invoke Spiderman. Which means it was a good day.

So, at the end, I did see my scores, and I did write them down, but like a bonehead I didn't write down which was for which portion of the test. I was feeling pretty down about it at first since for some reason I thought the scores were out of 1000, but since I looked up the scores and found out that they're out of 800, I'm now very pleased with myself and will no longer threaten to retake the test or commit seppuku like I was originally intending.

So, the scores:
720 in ?
790 in ?

It looks like on average people score better in the quantitative than the verbal, so maybe 790 is my quantitative score, but that just seems kind of weird to me. At least on the SATs, my verbal was significantly higher than my quantitative score, and I felt like I struggled more with the quantitative stuff. (I got down to the wire on time, if nothing else!) So who knows. I'll get my print-out next week or the week after I think, so then I'll know for sure then. But either way, I think I did pretty well!

(Just wait. I wrote them down wrong and I will have to commit seppuku after all once I get the print out.)

And now I'm off to get my luggage packed for TAM. Woohoo, fun weekend ahoy!

Today was something of an adventure. Kat drove up to hang out and play Arkham Horror. I decided to get a swim in before she arrived, and would have gotten home in plenty of time, except I found a dog. A little female Yorkshire terrier, just trotting down the middle of 72nd, heading for Sheridan. I was so worried she'd get hit by a car. So I pulled over and called to her, and she came right over. She seemed a little scared of me touching her, but then the minute I picked her up, she basically just clung to me. I took her home and put her out on the back porch, then promptly had to chase her down again because she was so teeny she just slipped right through the fence. I ended up having to dig up the little harness I bought for Loki and putting that on her, and all the straps had to be tightened because she was just TEENY.

Poor thing was a mess. Kat said she looked like she hadn't been groomed in month, and she was terribly dirty and her nails seriously needed to be trimmed. I called around to see if anyone I knew might want a Yorkie, then ended up taking her to TMAC. We had to wait for about an hour just to hand her over; this is apparently the busiest day of the year for them, since so many dogs freak out and run away from the fireworks. The lady I handed the Yorkie over to said she was probably about eight, and thought that they'd be able to find her a good home since she was so sweet and well-behaved. (Obviously leash-trained as well.) And she didn't have a chip, which was sad. Well, hopefully they will find her a good home.

It just made me wish that I was home enough to take care of a dog. I would have kept her for myself. What a sweet baby.

Hanging out with Kat was lots of fun. She graciously put up with the dog adventure, and then we went to On the Border for lunch since there's one near TMAC. We basically just hung out and did Arkham Horror, which is a great way to spend a day in my opinion.

Yesterday was a lot of fun too. We did a BBQ at mom and dad's, and watched some old Twilight Zone episodes (the ones with William Shatner in them) since there was a Twilight Zone marathon on SciFi.

Ah, and yesterday I also watched The Pick of Destiny. I honestly really enjoyed the movie and I think I might have to buy a copy for myself. But I really like Jack Black's music.

Just read Palin's resignation statement. My inner English major just slit its wrists. And I think I sprained something in my head trying to make sense of it.

MEDIC!

But seriously, what? Maybe there's some kind of medical/family emergency, and that would make sense, but... bzuh? Drugs? Aliens with mind-control rays? The Illuminati?

If you haven't seen it yet, it's on the front page of her website. The quotation marks sprinkled throughout it seemingly at random leave me fearing for her sanity, though. It's about one step from the benchmark of wingnut writing, random capslocking.
